December Mock Exam - Learner Response Blog

1) Type up any feedback on your paper (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). If you only have marks and a grade on the paper, write a WWW/Next Steps yourself based on your scores.

39/84 Grade 5

WWW - What went well was that I strongly based my points on the question with detailed points and when it came to the higher mark questions and also

Next Steps - To recall key terms regarding media industry and media conventions, and consider the power dynamic established between the two extracts.

2) Use the mark scheme for this Paper 2 mock (posted on GC) to read the answers AQA were looking for. First, write down a definition and example of non-diegetic sound (Q1.1 and 1.2).

Diegetic Sound - all sounds that are created by the audience.

An example of non-diegetic sound is any example of dialogue from the extract such as ‘When Lyra says, “So you’re a kitchen boy then?”.

3) Next, identify three points you could have made in Q1.3 - camerawork and the extract. Look for the indicative content in the mark scheme - these are the suggested answers from AQA.

- Basic analysis of the extract only focusing on the more straightforward aspects of what is communicated by the camerawork, this is likely to be more descriptive than analytical.

- Consider the difference of power and dynamics established between the two

- Very little, if any, appropriate use of subject specific terminology.

4) Now look at Q1.4 in the mark scheme - pick out two points from the mark scheme that you could have included in your answer.

- Good overall judgments throughout my points created, which is frequently supported with evidence.

- Good analysis of the extract that is clear and generally engages, with the nuanced aspects of the question.

5) Look at Q2 - the 20-mark essay on representations of age and social and cultural contexts. Pick out three points from the mark scheme that you didn't include in your answer.

• Satisfactory knowledge and understanding of contexts of media and their influence on media products and processes, demonstrated by some appropriate but not always convincing discussion of age representations in relation to the two close study products.

- Good knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework, demonstrated by frequent effective discussion of the debate about regulation of social media and the internet.

- Mostly appropriate and effective use of subject specific terminology.

6) Turning your attention to Section B, write a definition and example of user-generated content - use the mark scheme to check it.

User Generated Content - material contributed to media or posted on websites by non-professionals.

An example of User generated content is images on online media.

7) Look at Q4 - the 20-mark essay on the power of influencers. Pick out three points from the mark scheme that you didn't include in your own answer.

- Good analysis of the product(s) that is clear and often engages with the nuanced aspects of celebrity and power.

- Good judgements and conclusions which focus on ‘power’ and which

are usually well supported by relevant examples.

-  Frequent appropriate and effective use of subject specific terminology.

8) Now look at Q5 - the 20-mark essay on regulation and the internet. Again, pick out three points from the mark scheme that you didn't include in your own answer.

- Good understanding and strong knowledge of the theoretical framework, demonstrated by frequent effective discussion of the debate about regulation of social media and the internet.

- Good judgements and conclusions that are usually supported by

relevant examples.

- Mostly appropriate and effective use of subject specific terminology.

9) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for your Media mock exam? Be honest here - it's a good chance to think about how to approach the next set of mock exams.

I did prepare some notes for the mock and did recall some key terms about some media conventions and CSP'S we've covered. In my opinion for the next set mocks I want to improve more from the grade 5 to a grade 6 and respond to my feedback with stronger points to back up my views.

10) List three key things you want to revise before the next mock exams in February (e.g. particular CSPs, terminology, exam technique etc.)

- AGE REPRESENTATIONS

- BLUMBER & KATZ

- MEDIA REGULATION AND LAW

- BODY LANGUAGE AND EXPRESSIIONS

- SOCIAL, CULTURAL, ETHINICITY CONTEXTS
